Max Takes on National Series Round in Canberra

Max Takes on National Series Round in Canberra

At Mackay Cycles, we take immense pride in supporting our brand ambassadors as they push their limits and chase their dreams. This past weekend, Max represented us at the National Series Round in Canberra, and we had the chance to catch up with him to hear about his experience.

The Road to Nationals

When asked about his journey to competing at such a high level, Max shared that after strong performances at the Queensland State Titles, he wanted to test himself against Australia’s best and gain valuable experience ahead of the upcoming Australian Championships in two weeks.

“I am grateful to have competed in Canberra and to have met the top riders from around Australia. It was fun to push myself on the challenging courses.”

Facing the Toughest Competition

As a 12-year-old in his first year of Under 15s, Max was up against riders nearly two years older with much more experience. However, he stayed focused and determined.

“I didn't let them psych me out. I pushed as hard as I could and used each race as a learning experience. I feel much more relaxed going into the National Championships in two weeks.”

Tackling the XCO Course

With a few days to practice the course beforehand, Max took time to study and master the technical A-lines. Saturday’s race featured some of the most demanding sections he had ever faced, including the notorious ‘Cardiac Arrest’ climb and the treacherous ‘Hammer Head’ descent.

“‘Cardiac Arrest’ was a super steep climb with 200m of elevation—I couldn’t feel my arms at the top, and my heart rate was over 200! Just over the crest, it went straight down into ‘Hammer Head,’ with three 2m near-vertical rocky rollers right after each other.”

Lessons Learned from Racing at the National Level

Max had to navigate a massive field of competitors, with nearly 60 riders across multiple categories starting together. It was an entirely new challenge, but he rose to the occasion.

“It was the biggest group I had ever started in. I was proud of my starts and am now much more confident in my ability to power through the bunch and hold my lines.”

What’s Next?

After an intense weekend in Canberra, Max is already setting his sights on the next challenge—the Australian National Championships in Mt Buller this Saturday. With freezing temperatures and even snow in the forecast, it’s going to be a test of both skill and endurance.

“I'm looking forward to catching up with some new friends and riding exciting trails before the event. I hope to finish in the top 10, and next year, in my second year in Under 15s, my goal is to be on the podium!”

We’re incredibly proud of Max and can’t wait to see him in action at Mt Buller. Stay tuned for updates and be sure to cheer him on as he takes on the Australian Championships! 🚴‍♂️🔥
