Josh Harris – From Marathon Runner to Esports Cycling Pioneer
Josh Harris’s cycling journey is one of reinvention. For 20 years, Josh focused on high-level marathon running, reaching the sport's pinnacle before injuries forced him to pause. During his recovery, he discovered cycling, eventually competing at a high level on the road in 2019. However, it was in 2022 that Josh found his true calling—esports cycling.
Esports has become Josh's specialty, combining his endurance training with the tactical demands of virtual racing. His achievements include finishing 8th at the 2024 Esports World Championships Live Final, winning the 2023/24 Zwift Grand Prix, and claiming the 2022 Continental Hill Climb Championship on Zwift. Josh excels on 5-minute climbs, achieving an impressive 7.45w/kg multiple times this season.
Reflecting on his early days, Josh fondly remembers a sporting challenge at university with his friend, Josh Wilson. A casual cycling event sparked the suggestion to take up the sport seriously—a turning point in his journey. Although his road racing career included tough experiences like the 2019 Tour of Tasmania, where harsh conditions tested his resilience, Josh views these moments as invaluable lessons.
In 2023, Josh had the honor of representing Australia at the UCI Zwift World Championships alongside Mackay Cycles' owner, Kyle Marwood. Competing together on the global stage was a highlight for both athletes, showcasing their dedication and skill in the rapidly growing esports cycling discipline.
Josh’s connection with Mackay Cycles began at the esports Nationals. Impressed by his dedication and potential, Kyle saw an opportunity to support Josh in this emerging discipline. Since joining the team, Josh has enhanced his performance with optimized gear, including specialized road shoes that have significantly improved his power output.
Training approximately 16 hours a week, Josh’s routine is a mix of high-intensity sessions and active recovery. His discipline and internal motivation drive him to push boundaries, even on tough days. After a grueling ride, Josh enjoys indulging in a block of chocolate or ice cream—though he admits to keeping these treats in moderation.
Looking to the future, Josh dreams of competing in the Esport Olympic Games, rumored to debut in 2025. This potential event in Saudi Arabia would be the ultimate stage for his esports career. Additionally, he’s gearing up for the 2025 Zwift Games and future World Championships.
For Josh, esports cycling represents more than just competition; it’s a growing discipline that combines strategy, endurance, and innovation. As a Mackay Cycles ambassador, he is helping to bridge the gap between traditional and virtual cycling, inspiring others to explore the limitless possibilities of the sport.
